Annual Report for Greece 2010
Currently, in Greece there are approximately 250 active homeopathic doctors, an additional 120 homeopathic doctors are currently being trained (Athens and Thessaloniki). There are about 40 laymen practicing homeopathy, although the Medical Associations have opposed this practice. In particular, the Thessaloniki Medical Institute (www.isth.gr) decided in April 2006 that Homeopathy and Acupuncture is regarded as a medical practice by the state and may only be practiced by medical doctors trained in this therapeutic method.
Classical homeopathy is the prevalent form of homeopathy being practiced in Greece. Complex remedies are available as οver-the-counter (OTC) drugs. According to the Government's Gazette, 918, 14.12.1994, a decision was taken as to the harmonization of Greek legislation with the relevant European laws on the institution of legislative rules and administrative provisions for homeopathic pharmaceutical products for human use according to the Council's 72/73 EEC Recommendation ( see "FEK - HOM.PHARMAKA").
Since 2007, there has been a Master in Classical Homeopathy offered by the Aegean University, in collaboration with the Hellenic Homeopathic Medical Society (HHMS) and the International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, G. Vithoulas (IACH). The MSc is officialy recognized both in Greece and European Union.
By far the largest and strongest homeopathic medical society is the Hellenic Homeopathic Medical Society (HHMS), which will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year. There have been some other efforts from minor organizations and individuals regarding education.
There are two homeopathic magazines being published quartely, with approximately 5000 copies per issue. These are being distributed to doctors, pharmacists and patients. In 2009, the HHMS translated the ECH informative booklet "Homeopathic Care in a Medical Context" into Greek and printed and distributed about 10000 copies. The public is also being informed electronically through the website www.homeopathy.gr, which receives more than 1000 visitors per day. Furthermore, the HHMS sends out a homeopathic newsletter to homeopathic practitioners.
There is an outpatient clinic for treatment of migraines in a public hospital and another ongoing collaboration focusing on fertility.
Some homeopathic doctors have also been elected as members in the professional medical boards (Athens and Greek Medical Association).
